She turns to her husband and says, “Don’t despair.” But he replies, “I am not despairing; I am bloody.” He uses the word “despair” to describe his emotions about losing his wife, but that’s not what Shakespeare meant. The word “despair” means to give up, to stop fighting for something important. This is the opposite of what Lady Macbeth is trying to tell her husband.
